What a Detailing Setup Actually Needs in Pakistan

What a Detailing Setup Actually Needs in Pakistan

Every guide to setting up a detailing business is written for someone in America or Europe. They assume products you can’t easily get here, water you can drink from a tap, and customers who already know what paint correction is. If you are starting or scaling a detailing operation in Pakistan, the product side of the question looks different — and getting it wrong is expensive in a way that is hard to undo.

This is not a business plan. It is a straight look at what a working chemical inventory actually needs to cover, and where new operators usually overspend.

Buy for stages, not for products

The most common mistake we see is a shelf full of overlapping bottles that all roughly do the same thing, and a gap where something essential should be. A working setup covers four stages, in order:

  • Wash and decontaminate. Shampoo, an iron remover for embedded fallout, and clay. Skipping decontamination and going straight to the machine means grinding contamination into the paint.
  • Cut. A heavy compound for correction work. This is where the visible transformation happens and where your labour hours go.
  • Refine. A finishing polish to clear the haze that cutting leaves, especially on dark cars.
  • Protect. A wax, sealant or coating to finish and hand the car over.

If you have two products in one stage and none in another, you are not equipped — regardless of how much you have spent.

Consumer sizes will quietly destroy your margins

A retail bottle is priced for someone doing their own car four times a year. Running a bay on retail sizes means paying retail packaging cost on every single car you touch.

The professional line exists for this reason. Meguiar’s Mirror Glaze and professional compounds come in 32 oz and gallon sizes — Ultra Cut Compound, Pro Speed Compound and Diamond Cut Compound are all available in gallons.

The per-car cost difference between a gallon and a retail bottle is not marginal. It is the difference between a job that makes money and one that doesn’t.

Work out your cost per car, not your cost per bottle. It is the only number that tells you whether a job was worth doing.

Pads are consumables, and most people under-buy them

Pads wear, load up with spent product, and stop cutting. A saturated pad does not correct paint — it smears compound around and wastes your time, then your client’s patience.

Plan for multiple pads per car, separated by function: cutting, polishing and finishing pads are not interchangeable, and using a cutting pad with a finishing polish gives you the worst of both. A pad washer pays for itself quickly if you are running any real volume, because it extends pad life rather than sending them to the bin half-worn.

Interior is where the repeat business is

Paint correction is a high-value job that a customer might buy once a year. Interior work is what brings them back. In our climate it is also what customers feel most urgently — dashboards that have baked through a Punjab summer, plastics gone chalky and grey, vinyl and rubber that has hardened.

An all-purpose cleaner, a dedicated vinyl and rubber treatment, and glass cleaner cover most of it. Meguiar’s Mirror Glaze vinyl and rubber cleaner and conditioner comes in gallon size for exactly this kind of repeat work.

What is worth spending on first

  • Compound and pads. Your output quality and your labour time both live here.
  • Bulk sizes of whatever you use daily. Shampoo and compound before anything else.
  • Enough pads to finish a car without stopping. Running out mid-job costs more than the pads did.
  • One good finishing product rather than four mediocre protection options.

What can wait: specialist products for problems you have not yet been asked to solve. Buy those when a customer asks, not in advance.

Buying from the authorised importer

Protek Devices has been the sole official importer and distributor of Meguiar’s in Pakistan since 2012. For a workshop, that matters for practical reasons rather than sentimental ones: consistent formulation batch to batch, product that has not spent a year in the wrong storage conditions, and the ability to reorder the same thing next month.

A compound that behaves differently between bottles is a real problem when you have quoted a customer a fixed price for a job.
